Dog Licensing

According to ordinance 9.07 no more than four (4) dogs and/or cats, in aggregate, may be kept in one household. The Village of DeForest requires that your dog(s) be licensed before April 1, of each year or within thirty (30) days of acquiring ownership of a licensable dog.

Dog License Fees:
$17.00 - Altered (spayed females or neutered males)
$24.00 - Unaltered (unspayed or unneutered males)

 

Ways to license your pet:

Online (new): Visit dog license application to complete your new or renewal dog license(s). Please be ready to upload your rabies certificate that was issued from your veterinarian. Credit/debit card payments can be processed with the online form, or cash/check payments will need to be mailed or delivered to Municipal Building located at 120 S. Stevenson Street.  For credit card payments, there will be a 2.85% fee plus $.30 per transaction.  Once the license is approved, Village staff will mail all tags to owners.

Online (renewal): Do you need to renew a dog license(s) from the previous year? A renewal email link will be sent to all licensed dog(s) owners in December. If you need to request the email link to be resent, please contact licensing@vi.deforest.wi.us

 

In-person: You can license your animal(s) at the Municipal Building located at 120 S. Stevenson Street, during regular Village Hall Office Hours. Please bring in a copy of the rabies certificate that was issued from your veterinarian. The rabies certificate has the required information which includes the animals name, rabies vaccination date and expiration date, rabies vaccine manufacturer and serial number, owners name and current address which is the information we need to complete our paperwork. Credit/debit card or cash/check payments will be accepted.

By Mail/Dropbox: If you are unable to come to the Municipal Building during our office hours, you can mail or drop off a copy of the rabies certificate with the payment for the license(s), along with a self addressed stamped envelope, Village staff will mail all tags to owners.

Late Fee:
The Village of DeForest requires that your dog(s) be licensed before April 1, of each year or within thirty (30) days of acquiring ownership of a licensable dog. Any animal licensed after that date will be subject to a $5.00 late fee along with the regular license fee. An owner will not be subject to a late fee if the animal(s) in question is too young to obtain its rabies vaccination before April 1. When the animal in question does reach the appropriate age and it does obtain its rabies certificate, the owner of the animal will then license their animal with the Village of DeForest. Per DeForest Municipal Code, Section 9.07.

 

Replacement Tag:
In the event a tag is lost the owner shall obtain a replacement tag for $1.00.

 

Note: License fees are distributed to Dane County as regulated and a portion is retained at the Village of DeForest for administration of licensing, as required by the State, for the maintenance of records to ensure the availability of information should situations arise regarding the licensed dog.

 

Leash Requirements:
Dogs must be kept on a leash when in parks and other public places. Per DeForest Municipal Code, Section 9.07.
